Dramatic sports portraits aren’t just about showing off the jersey—they’re about capturing power, identity, and energy. When you book a session like this, it’s not a quick snapshot. It’s a bold, styled, high-impact photo experience that’s designed to make you look like you belong on the cover of Sports Illustrated—or a Nike ad.
And what you wear plays a massive role in that.
If you’ve never done a session like this before, don’t stress. Most of my clients haven’t either. That’s what I’m here for. I guide you through the whole process, including what to wear, how to wear it, and how to make it look like pure fire under my lighting setup. This post is your inside look at how to dress for a dramatic sports session, what to bring, what to skip, and how to make sure the photos we create together feel unforgettable.
Start with Your Sport—and Build from There
The first thing I want you to think about is your sport. Whether you’re a football player, volleyball standout, track star, wrestler, ballerina, or multi-sport athlete, your gear and outfit should highlight what you love and who you are when you’re on that field or court.
That usually means bringing your full uniform. And I don’t mean just throwing a jersey in the backseat. I’m talking about the full look. Cleats, shoes, socks, tape, pads, gloves, accessories, equipment—everything that tells your story. If it’s something you’d wear on game day, it should probably be in the car when you show up. If you’re known for rocking a certain number, a signature shoe, or a certain color tape, that detail matters here. These portraits are about honoring your hustle, not just checking a box for senior year.
If you don’t have a uniform available—or you’re in the off-season—that’s totally fine. Bring practice gear, game-day warmups, or even casual athletic wear that still reflects your style and sport. I’ve worked with athletes who showed up with varsity jackets, compression tights and hoodies, choreographed warm-up looks, and even full-on custom fits. The vibe doesn’t have to be traditional. It just has to feel like you.
Think Clean, Styled, and Structured
Even when we’re going gritty and dramatic, your outfit still needs to look polished. And I don’t mean fancy—I mean intentional. Show up in something clean, structured, and put together. Wrinkled uniforms, stained shirts, worn-out gear, or faded socks can distract from the bold style we’re going for.
Dramatic lighting highlights everything. So if your shorts are sagging, your jersey is rumpled, or your shoes look like they haven’t seen soap since 2019, it’ll show up in the final image. Your outfit doesn’t have to be brand new, but it should be shoot-ready. Think game-day fresh, not laundry-day leftover.
If we’re doing something more creative—like mixing streetwear with your sport—bring layered pieces that add dimension. A clean pair of sneakers, a hoodie under your letterman jacket, a longline tee under your jersey—those little style choices photograph beautifully under off-camera flash.
Your Shoes Will Be in the Shot
Let me just say this again for the people in the back. Your shoes matter. They’re not an afterthought. They will be in the frame. If you’re in cleats, they should look like they’re part of the full story. If we’re shooting in an urban location or adding street-style photos into the mix, a solid pair of sneakers or athletic kicks can elevate the look.
Don’t show up in slides. Don’t show up in mismatched socks unless that’s your brand. And definitely don’t forget your sport-specific shoes if that’s part of the visual you want to create. Your shoes say a lot about your role, your hustle, and your game. Make sure they’re telling the right story.
If you are a girly-girl outside of the sports, feel free to bring heels to go with your uniform or a dress to be paired with your sports outfit.
What About Hair and Makeup?
This session is all about power. You don’t need a full glam squad unless that’s part of your vision—but I do recommend showing up styled in a way that photographs well and feels like you.
For hair, make sure it’s out of your face and holds up to wind, sweat, and movement. We’re going to be active. We might throw in fans, flashes, or a little grit. Think game-day strong, not perfectly polished.
If you wear makeup, I suggest something that helps with shine and enhances your natural features without overpowering. You don’t need full lashes and contour unless that’s your thing—but a little matte powder and brow definition can go a long way under flash.
If you’re someone who always wears a chain, a bracelet, face paint, eye black, tape, or a signature hair style—bring that energy. Those little details? They make these portraits look like you, not just another athlete with a ball in their hands.
What Not to Wear
Here’s where I’m going to keep it real. There are a few things that just don’t work in dramatic sports portraits—and I want you to feel confident knowing what to leave at home.
Skip anything oversized or shapeless that hides your form or energy. Baggy sweatpants, boxy tees, or gear that doesn’t fit right will take the power out of the pose. Avoid clothing with distracting logos or brand names that have nothing to do with your sport. If it’s not part of your team or identity, it doesn’t need to be in the frame.
And please, don’t wear anything that you’d normally wear to clean your room or run errands. These portraits are going on walls. They’re getting printed in albums. They’re going to be looked at for years. Wear something that makes you feel unstoppable.
Need Help Styling? I Got You.
I don’t just show up and start snapping. Every session I offer includes full prep help—including outfit planning, location scouting, and coaching you through how to show up and feel like a badass in front of the camera. If you’re not sure what to wear, I’ll help you plan it. We can text photos, FaceTime your closet, or even build a Pinterest board if that helps you lock in a look that feels true to you.
This is your moment to show the world what kind of athlete—and person—you really are. Whether it’s your senior year, your comeback season, or a celebration of everything you’ve built, these portraits are designed to be bold, emotional, and damn near unforgettable.
